There are three things that my patients know I’m passionate about – cutting-edge eye care, bicycling, and photography. So when I get the chance to combine any of these three into one amazing experience, I jump at it! Bicycle photo tours are a great way to get some fun exercise while getting some amazing shots.
When it’s a scenic view that you want, the following bicycle tours deliver. Grab your camera, pack a few snacks, water, sunscreen, a bike pump (in case of emergency), and your cellphone (also in case of emergency).
Whatever you do, don’t forget to bring your sunglasses, to keep your eyes protected from the harmful rays of the sun, before heading out. And remember that anyone aged 17 and under should wear a helmet—it’s the law, and also a good idea for everyone in your group.
So without further ado, here are some excellent New Jersey photo tours.
Old Mine Road
Begin: Kittatinny Point Visitors Center, Slateford, NJ
For the best ride, begin your trip during the week, when there are far fewer travelers with whom you’ll need to share the road. Hills, twists, and turns make this course exciting. Built by the Dutch settlers to get copper ore from the Pahaquarry Mines to what is now Kingston, New York, the road dates back to 1659. Bike around the historic Delaware River for amazing views, like waterfalls, for loads of great photo ops.
Double Trouble Bike Tour
Double Trouble State Park off Exit 77 of the Garden State Parkway
It might be fifty-four miles long, but it’s also an easy, breezy ride. Stop by Wells Mills Park, Ocean County’s largest, and enjoy the 900 acres of forest, a lake, and the fabulous third floor observation deck. Take your photos and head out, because there’s more to see. The Albert Music Hall is on the route, as is the Waretown Pier, and Barnegat Bay makes a lovely landscape image. Come back around through the Pine Barrens for more image inspiration before returning to the starting point.
Last Covered Bridge Ride
For the shorter loop, park in Ringoes. For the longer loop, park in Ringoes or Community Park North in Princeton.
Is there anything better than a bike ride? Only a bike ride tour that features a covered bridge. It’s hilly, it’s low traffic, and features three loops. Decide between the 14, 24, or 47-mile loop. Then, enjoy the quiet of the country as you ride by Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge, a whitewashed bridge that stretches across Wickecheoke Creek. Almost any season boasts a scenic ride, but Autumn makes an especially pretty backdrop for photos.
Cape May Shoreline Ride
Begin and end at Cape May Lighthouse parking lot.
New Jersey’s southernmost county is a beauty. From the Victorian-era architecture to the lighthouses, to the wetlands and boardwalks, it’s a moderately easy trail (unless there is wind). Stop at Sunset Beach and look for Cape May “diamonds,” the quartz pebbles that frequently wash ashore. As you continue on, you will make it to the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, another great photo spot, before riding through the country’s oldest seashore resort, Cape May City.
