If you’re looking to improve you’re overall health and you’re a millennial, chances are that eye care may not be on the top of your list. But, it should be.
Why should I care?
Because as you age, eyesight is one of the foremost things to be effected and it’s not always a pleasant adjustment. Taking measures to care for your eyes now, when you’re young will decrease the chances of having to take higher-risk measures when you’re older and can prevent diseases.
What can I do?
There are lots of steps you can take to start protecting your eyes now. From shielding them in the sun, to making sure you get the right tests done, there are many things. One step in particular you can take is getting LASIK surgery.
LASIK surgery has been around since 1989 and while people were hesitant to take the plunge and get the surgery for some time, there have been advances that make it more desirable a procedure. There are a few specific reasons that millennials in particular may be interested to look into LASIK.
Safety
As we mentioned above, advances have been made since the 1990s that significantly decrease the risks that used to be associated with LASIK. Of course, as with any procedure, there still are risks, but the probability of them the risks becoming reality, is less likely.
Recovery Time
Most millennials are concerned about taking time off from work for the LASIK procedure and recovery time and understandably—they don’t get awarded many days off as their more seasoned colleagues. Luckily for them though, the recovery time of the LASIK procedure doesn’t take long at all. If you were to receive LASEK surgery (and you can find out the difference between the 2 here), the recovery time would take a little longer. That said, LASIK’s recovery time takes as little as time span and so you don’t have to be out of commission for too long.
Fitness
We mentioned above that eye care may not be on the top of the list for many millennials. Fitness however, is. With the popularity of exercise workouts like running, spinning, dancing, and others becoming much more popular, one can only imagine how eyesight could get in the way. If you’re used to wearing glasses during your workout, you may be familiar with the constant adjustments needed (wind shield wipers for sweat, anyone?) and that’s never pleasant. Similarly, even if you wear contacts and have the advantage of better peripheral vision, there’s always the hazard of your contacts drying out and ruining your focus, which most athletes understand to be one of the most important factors contributing to a successful workout.
After receiving LASIK surgery, you no longer have to worry about packing a glasses case or refreshing eye drops in your gym bag. All the little things you used to have to keep in mind in relation to your eyes are no more, and you can focus on what’s important—that new personal record.
Confidence
Were you ever called “four eyes” as a child? If so, you weren’t alone. Childhood teasing can follow us for sometime, creating unpleasant reminders and a lower self-esteem. If you were to look online now, you’d find many articles about how to develop and grow a sense of confidence while wearing glasses. And we’re not saying you shouldn’t be proud to rock awesome frames, you should! But if you don’t have to wear glasses anymore, why do it? While not wearing glasses anymore isn’t that drastic of a change, it’s still enough to give your ego the boost that you need to show the world that part of your self that may have been shielded by an extra layer of unnecessary glass and plastic.
You Can
You’re an adult and can make your own decisions. You couldn’t do that in middle school when you were getting teased, or in college when you picked up your running habit. But now, you can. And what’s great about LASIK is that, in comparison to other surgeries, the cost is not that daunting, meaning it’s a realistic financial goal for you to set and make.
Where do I start?
It’s understandable that you’d have a lot of questions before investing your time, money, and health into getting the LASIK procedure. If you would like to get in touch, please feel free to reach out!
