All About KAMRA

October 17, 2016

There are certain unavoidable physical changes that occur as we get older. Our hair starts to go gray, and we start to occasionally forget things. Most people will also see a change in their vision. Even if you’ve had perfect vision all your life, you’ll probably end up suffering from presbyopia, or farsightedness, as you get older. Presbyopia occurs when the eye’s natural lens begins to stiffen. It happens as we age, and results in our eyes losing their ability to focus on things that are close up.

Have you started holding books and newspapers at arm’s length? Reading glasses are a decent fix for farsightedness, but they take some getting used to, and you have to keep them with you wherever you go. Remember that forgetfulness thing we mentioned that comes along with aging?

That’s why at OCLI we’re so excited about our new KAMRA inlay procedure. The KAMRA inlay is a small ring that sits in your cornea, and the tiny ring creates a pinhole effect that focuses incoming light to help restore your near vision. And there’s no need to worry about your current vision, as KAMRA doesn’t affect your distance vision. In fact, KAMRA only goes in your non-dominant eye, the one that you naturally use for reading things up close. Your dominant eye that you use for distance vision remains unaffected by the procedure.

The KAMRA inlay is completely reversible if necessary, and it doesn’t require any modification as the years pass. That means you won’t be coming in again and again for touch ups. Just one appointment and you can be free of your reading glasses.

As impressive as KAMRA is, it isn’t for everyone. KAMRA is only for patients who don’t already need glasses or contacts for clear distance vision, and are between the ages of 40 and 60. However, it can be given to people who have previously had their vision corrected with LASIK. LASIK can fix a number of different vision problems, but it can’t stop the natural stiffening of the lens that causes presbyopia. Another important thing to note is that the KAMRA inlay can be given to those who have had cataracts removed, as long as they meet the other vision requirements.

As far as the procedure itself, the KAMRA inlay only takes about 20 minutes from start to finish, and is pain free. Most patients will return to their normal daily activities within one to two days. It’s also important to remember that as helpful as the KAMRA inlay can be, you may still need your reading glasses in some cases.

There’s no procedure that can stop aging, but you don’t have to feel its effects on your eyes. If you’re interested in the KAMRA inlay and think you might be a good candidate, then call today and schedule a consultation with the experts at OCLI. Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you have to carry reading glasses with you for the rest of your life.
