Since 2007, Blog Action Day has focused bloggers around the world to blog about one important global topic on the same day. Past topics have included water, climate change and poverty.
This year, Blog Action Day is today, October 16, which coincides with World Food Day, so naturally their 2011 theme is FOOD… Each month, we at OCLI pick a charity to sponsor. Each fall, OCLI is involved in 2 charitable efforts:
- Vision Harvest free cataract surgery day, which is scheduled for October 28.
- We try to support a local charity involved with food. Last year it was the Market Street Mission. This year it is The New Jersey FoodBank.
The FoodBank distributes 37 million pounds of food and groceries a year, ultimately serving 1,500 non-profit programs including 436 programs served by its Partner Distribution Organizations (PDOs). Through their combined efforts, they assist 900,000 low-income people in 18 of New Jersey’s 21 counties. For every dollar of their operating budget, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey is able to distribute $9.59 worth of food and groceries. Donating online is an instant and easy way to support the FoodBank. The In the last two years they’ve seen a 40% increase in need — forcing their distribution to skyrocket from 23 to 37 million pounds of food per year.
They helped feed more than 900,000 people in 2010 — with children and the elderly accounting for 55% of those who received food.
To meet rising demand, The Community FoodBank of New Jersey has launched a capital campaign to raise $15 million to help renovate and expand existing facilities along with updating existing fleets and warehouse assets. We would like to help, and we need your help as well. Through November:
- Donate $50 to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and OCLI will match your donation and give you $500 off a bilateral LASIK procedure.
- Donate some food at our office (canned food preferred) and receive a $40 off coupon to be used either in our optical shop for a new pair of glasses or for a new contact lens fitting!
Please help us make a difference for those in need!
