Easy Everyday Tips to Improve Eye Health

June 10, 2019

While most people believe that 20/20 vision is genetic and that our eye health is determined by our genes, that not entirely true.

There are a handful of behaviors we engage in that can make or break our eye health. Some of these include screen time, diet, and even hydration. This is why it’s essential to build a solid foundation for healthy eyes, as this is actually something we choose and control.

Here’s what you need to know:

The Eye-Healthy Diet

Yes, this is actually a thing! Just like the paleo diet can help the heart, so too can an eye health-conscious diet preserve the eyes. There are some superfoods that can really help boost your eye health in the best of ways, while also contributing to other factors like your immune system.

Fish is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help defend against dry eyes, cataracts, and even macular degeneration. If you’re not into fish or headed toward a vegan lifestyle, it’s best to at least get a good supply of omega-3. You can also opt for non-animal options like flaxseed or black currant oil.

Other powerhouse foods that can help prevent eye conditions include eggs, leafy greens, and vegetables. Specifically, lentils and kidney beans are amazing sources of bioflavonoids and zinc, which help keep your eyes hydrated and lower the risks of developing complications such as cataracts.

Reduce Digital Eye Strain

Staring at a computer or a phone screen all day can literally cause physical distress—also known as the “digital eye strain.” Symptoms include blurry vision, dry eyes, headaches, and issues focusing at distances.

As most of us work behind a screen and can’t really control this necessity, it’s best to try and reduce potential eye strain. You can do this by adjusting the contrast and brightness of your screen, making it easier to focus. Also, turning off any overhead lights and placing an anti-glare cover on your screen can ensure a much easier environment to work in. Too much glare coming from your screen can actually make it a whole lot more difficult to see objects on your monitor!

Another hidden secret is keeping your eyes hydrated with artificial or prescribed tears.

Last but not least, using the 20-20 rule can also help reduce eye strain dramatically. If you haven’t heard of this yet, try doing the following: look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes whenever behind a screen. Interval exercises like these can help ensure that your vision doesn’t become blurry.

Sunwear

Whether you’re headed for some fun in the sun or taking an outside stroll, putting on some shades can help shield your eyes from harmful UV rays at all times.

If you’re headed to buy new sunglasses make sure to look for labels like UV-protection to ensure you’re protecting your eyes at maximal capacity. The risks of the sun’s damaging rays can be often underestimated and overlooked. Better safe than sorry!
