Here are OCLI, we pride ourselves on being the most up-to-date on procedures available to our patients which can be used to treat and cure eye diseases or disorders. While there is no cure for Glaucoma, we are constantly seeking ways to help relieve the suffering of our patients. One way to do this is with new technology.
What’s the Deal with Our New Laser?
The new laser that we’ve brought to our practice is called the MicroPulse and we will use it to perform Trabeculoplasty. Trabeculoplasty is a procedure that we are doing to relieve the pressure on the eyes of patients suffering from Glaucoma. What the laser allows us to do is target the area of the eye where fluid drains.
When a patient suffers from Glaucoma, the fluid in their eyes is not able to properly drain well, resulting in fluid build up and pressure in the eye. The laser will target the drainage area of the eye and allow for the fluid to flow most freely.
When is a Laser for Glaucoma an option for me?
Typically when we assess patients who have Glaucoma, we tend to try to treat its symptoms with medication first. If after a period of time it is shown that the medication is no longer helping the patient, or never did, then we will consider the laser treatment with the MicroPulse laser.
What are the Risks of the MicroPulse Laser Procedure?
There are not many risks associated with this procedure. Directly after the procedure, the patient will experience discomfort for a number of hours after the procedure. In rare cases, a patient will experience an increase in pressure, rather than a decrease, bleariness of the cornea, a short period of inflammation, a blockage of the drainage spot, and in some cases, decreased vision.
