New York, NY – November, 2022 – OCLI Vision is committed to giving back to communities both locally and around the world and supporting its professionals as they do the same. Most recently, OCLI Vision Laser Cataract Surgeon and Comprehensive Ophthalmologist, Dr. Michael Sable and team member and ophthalmic technician Ana Henriquez, joined Sights on Health, Inc. on a cataract surgical mission trip to Perú. Dr. Sable is the Surgical Director of Sights on Health, Inc., and a member of the board of directors.
Sights on Health, Inc. is committed to providing quality, compassionate eye care services for those in need in Perú, Ecuador, and Native American communities across the USA. The mission trip, which took place in October, marked the organization’s ten-year anniversary since their first cataract surgical mission trip to the Scared Valley, Perú. Sights on Health, Inc. is comprised of a dedicated group of volunteer physicians, health care professionals, and allied healthcare student volunteers from across the USA that provide free eye surgery, eye care, and medical care.
In October, a team of 13 healthcare professionals transported and donated surgical supplies for 50 sight restoring surgeries, along with equipment to set up a portable eye clinic and operating room in a local health outpost in the remote village of Calca in the Sacred Valley, Perú. Sights on Health worked with Peruvian local physicians and municipalities to pre-screen the surgical patients. The surgical patients often traveled long distances from their villages perched high in the Andes Mountains, some traveled by bus and others by foot to reach the Sights on Health eye care team in the hopes that their vision would be restored. Thanks to the team’s dedication and countless hours of work, they enabled Sights on Health to give the gift of sight to those who would otherwise not have access to high-quality eye care.
OCLI Vision assisted Sights on Health by donating necessary ophthalmic surgical & anesthesia supplies. In addition, their sterilization department sterilized hundreds of cataract surgical instruments prior to their departure; enabling the surgical team to start operating as soon as the portable operating room was unpacked and set up. Spectrum Vision & many of their staff made generous donations which helped offset the costs of the mission. According to Sights on Health, they were very appreciative of the logistical and financial support they received from OCLI Vision.
“It has been an honor to be able to travel and provide quality, compassionate eye care services for those in need in Perú. Eye care changes lives and to be apart of changing lives for the better is all I could wish for. My hope is to give people access to advanced eye care services and technology, ensuring they receive all the treatment they need.” Says Dr. Sable.
Dr. Michael Sable has been on other eye care mission trips to Perú and Ecuador with Sights on Health. He has a passion for bringing the highest level of surgical intervention for curing blindness from cataracts to all patients, regardless of their access to quality healthcare. Before the pandemic, Dr. Sable made annual trips to South America with Sights on Health to perform sight restorative surgery for underprivileged patients. When not joining mission trips to Perú and Ecuador, Dr. Sable specializes in complex cataract surgery and anterior segment surgery, working from the Woodbury, Massapequa, Rockville Centre, and Oceanside OCLI Vision offices. Dr. Sable is also a clinical instructor for the North Shore Long Island Jewish hospital residency program.
