Eyelid lesion excision & reconstruction

Eyelid lesions come in all shapes and sizes.  They range from benign “bumps and lumps” to malignant cancers.  Lesions may appear suddenly and cause pain, or quietly grow over a long period of time.  They may be a source of cosmetic concern or cause symptoms that interfere with your daily activities. At OCLI, our team has the expertise needed to correctly diagnose your eyelid lesion and determine a proper treatment plan.

What are some common examples of eyelid lesions?

BENIGN LESIONS:

  • Cysts (either solid or fluid filled)
  • Chalazia
  • papillomas (“skin tags”)
  • Xanthelasma (cholesterol deposits)
  • Keratoses (“age spots”)

MALIGNANT LESIONS:

  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Melanoma
  • Sebaceous cell carcinoma

How are eyelid lesions managed?

Most benign eyelid lesions can be safely removed in a comfortable in-office procedure. As board certified ophthalmologists fellowship trained in oculoplastic surgery, we are best suited to remove lesions on the eyelid with an optimal cosmetic result. In general you will be able to return to normal activity the day following your procedure.

Malignant lesions may require a more involved treatment plan.  A biopsy will be performed to determine the type of cancer present.  A treatment plan will then be determined to safely remove the cancer and reconstruct the eyelid to achieve the best possible result.  In certain cases, we will work with other clinicians in the management of eyelid cancers.  This may include Mohs surgeons, oncologists, or radiation oncologists.

If you notice an eyelid lesion, be sure to contact OCLI for an appointment.
